Four Steps to a Better Audition
1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SONG.
Do your homework, and choose a song you could see us performing. As a general rule, steer clear of opera, throat singing, death metal, and hardcore musical theatre. Pop, alternative, and RnB are good places to start, but If you feel your voice is better suited to another style—jazz, rock, or what have you—bring it on! Heck, sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” if you think you can pull it off. You’ve only got a minute to show us everything you’ve got, though, so avoid selections that are too repetitive, that contain a lot of rests, or that only showcase a small part of your range in terms of both pitch and dynamics. Know your starting note or the key you want to sing it in if you’d like us to give you a pitch to start on. This is your chance to show off what you can do! Whatever you sing, be sure to…
2. PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS.
What makes you stand out? Got an awesome low range, super smooth falsetto, killer belt or crazy riffs? Show off a little! Or maybe your strengths are more subtle: great tone, or rock-solid pitch. Whatever your strengths are, pick a piece that will play them up. If you’re not comfortable with big diva solos or fast riffs and runs, leave them out; even if you’ve got a big voice, don’t play it up too much at the expense of musicality. We’re not just looking for big, bombastic soloists but solid, well-rounded singers who will sound great singing in a group. In other words:
3. SHOW SOME SUBTLETY.
Whether your solo voice is big and brassy, airy and light, smooth and jazzy or anything in between, we want to know that you can blend with other voices too. This means switching off your vibrato and other such stylistic elements when appropriate. Know when to be expressive and solostic, and when to dial your own style down and sing your part straight-up; when to go for the gusto, and when to show a little finesse. We’ll teach you a few bars of one of our songs, and have you sing it along with us to check out your ability to blend.
4. STAY CALM, BE POSITIVE, HAVE FUN!
Many have wondered: are we a singing group that has fun, or a fun-having group that sings? The answer is: yes! We’re looking for people who will jell with us not only on a musical level but personally as well, so a smile and a “can-do” attitude can make all the difference where group chemistry is concerned. Auditions are scary. We know. We’ve all been there, and it’s always intimidating to sing for a bunch of people while they sit there staring blankly. That said, know that we’re on your side, and we’re really pumped to hear you sing! So, as nervous as you might be, approach your audition with positivity—it’ll show.
